We all share the planet and, with increased intensity of use, need to be mindful that we leave our children the opportunity of enjoying it as much as we did. Fossil and mineral resources are limited and, through their exploitation, can poison our environment. Sustainable resources have to be managed so that our use does not exceed nature’s ability to refresh them. Organisations of all sizes need to ensure that they understand how they impact on their environment from a local level (e.g. noise, vibration, odour, traffic etc.) to a national and international level (e.g. waste, air emissions, groundwater contamination etc.).

An effective environmental management system considers the significant aspects of its activities on the environment and ensures that these are managed and considered as a factor in any business decision. A certified environmental management system shows customers and stakeholders that an effective environmental system is in place. Improvement activities within the organisation ensure that the system adjusts to environmental challenges and moves in the direction of sustainability.

Progressive certification also offer certification to Energy Management (ISO 50001) and Carbon Footprinting (ISO 14064-1, EU ETS or PAS 2050). Although the use of resources, including energy, is part of ISO 14001, these standards can be incorporated with ISO 14001 (or independently) to focus on these specific areas of sustainability. As energy costs are increasing year on year, energy management is often a “quick win” management system which pays for itself quickly. Understanding energy use promotes improvements in how energy is used as well as guiding the development of the organisation to minimise its footprint; carbon and energy hand in hand.
