Risk Management

Although ISO 31000 is not a certification standard, risk management is core to all business activities and is inherent in ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. The course covers the understanding of risk management terms, the concept of “risk” and the process of establishing an effective system of risk management. The course brings risk management to a practical level with examples that can easily be transferred from case study to implementation. The course will cover the requirements of NWA 31000.

After attending this course, attendees will have the knowledge and tools to conduct a risk assessment effectively and to maintain a watch on changes that might affect risk. A copy of NWA 31000 is included in each course pack.

This is a one day course with exercises and coursework.

(Richard Hadfield, the tutor, is a member of the NSAI ISO mirror committee on Risk Assessment).

Integrating Compliance Systems

The growth of management systems has often caused organisations to have disparate systems that manage compliance but which waste resources through duplication and compartmentalisation. The course identifies the areas that should be integrated and those that should be maintained as stand-alone activities as well as reviewing the pros and cons of integrating the activities in-between. The merits of using tools from one compliance area in another are identified together with examples.

After attending this course, attendees will have the knowledge and tools to integrate systems and gain efficiency without risk of increased exposure to non-conformity.

This is a one day course with exercises and coursework.

(Richard Hadfield, the tutor, is a IRCA registered Lead Auditor with nearly 20 years of experience as an auditor. Richard has written guidance for NSAI on integrating management and other systems).

Internal Auditor

Any organisation with a management system and/or product certification system needs to have an effective audit process. Key to an effective audit process is having competent auditors. Once an organisation has an effective audit systems it can use the audit output to manage its business better. This means that it can reduce expense and reputation damage incurred from regulatory non-compliance, poor quality supply chains and issues raised through voluntary compliance and concentrate on value added activities.

The course is modelled on the requirements of iSO19011 and the Auditing Practice Guidelines published by ISO. Auditors will understand how to audit effectively and be introduced to effective auditing habits.

After attending this course, attendees will have the knowledge and tools to audit any standard. A copy of ISO 19011 is included in each of the attendee course packs.

This is a two day course with exercises and coursework. An optional audit evaluation system is available to attendees with consequent certification after qualifying audits.

(Richard Hadfield, the tutor, is a IRCA registered Lead Auditor with nearly 20 years of experience as an auditor. Richard has also been certified as an automotive auditor and IQNet peer assessor).

Carbon Accounting

Carbon accounting is a recent activity that some organisations take on as part of their corporate reporting while others are permitted under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) and have to submit detailed annual reports. This course reviews the various carbon accounting systems and their merits and how organisations might make declarations concerning the carbon intensity of their activities.

After attending this course, attendees will have the knowledge and tools to implement and maintain a carbon accounting system. Guidance on the use of ISO 14064-1 and extracts from PAS 2050 will be included in each of the attendee course packs.

This is a two day course with exercises and coursework.

(Richard Hadfield, the tutor, is a verifier under EU Emissions Trading Scheme as well as having conducted audits to ISO 14064-1 and PAS 2050).

ISO 50001 Explained

ISO 50001 was published in 2011 and now supersedes EN 16001 (which, itself superseded I.S. 393). This dynamic in the world of standards shows the growing international interest in energy management. One of the drivers of this focus on energy has been the increased cost of energy and its increasing role in competitiveness. The course covers the concept of energy service and how energy use can be analysed and reduced. ISO 50001 is explained, clause by clause, with practical examples of implementation.

After attending this course, attendees will have the knowledge and tools to implement and maintain an ISO 50001 system effectively. A copy of ISO 50001 is included in each of the attendee course packs.

This is a two day course with exercises and coursework.

(Richard Hadfield, the tutor, is an architect with extensive knowledge of building, industrial systems and BER (Building Energy Rating).

OHSAS 18001 Explained

Every business is required to review its legal requirements (particularly the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act and Regulations) and have a health and safety statement appropriate to nature of its business. Many organisations understand that an effective OHSAS 18001 management system will help reduce their risks, increase awareness and ensure legal compliance. The course covers risk assessments, legal and regulatory requirements overview and each requirement of OHSAS 18001.

After attending this course, attendees will have the knowledge and tools to implement and maintain OHSAS 18001 systems effectively. A copy of OHSAS 18001 is included in each of the attendee course packs.

This is a two day course with exercises and coursework.

(Richard Hadfield, the tutor, has experience of health and safety risk assessments and auditing health and safety management systems).

ISO 14001 Explained

Protecting the environment might once have been the preserve of “dirty industries” and enthusiastic “greens” but the cost of environmental compliance and the increasing costs of non-compliance make it something that every organisation should consider. ISO 14001 provides a framework for environmental risk assessment and systems to avoid, reduce and eliminate these risks. The course covers environmental risk assessment methodologies, an overview of legislation and the requirements of each clause of ISO 14001.

After attending this course, attendees will have the knowledge and tools to implement and maintain ISO 14001 systems effectively. A copy of ISO 14001 is included in each of the attendee course packs.

This is a two day course with exercises and coursework.

(Richard Hadfield, the tutor, has been auditing environmental management systems for over 15 years)

ISO 9001 Explained

Quality Management is now a mature concept but commonly misunderstood and poorly applied. This course covers the ISO 9000 family of standards and the specific requirements of ISO 9001. The importance of the principles of ISO 9001 will be explained and linked to the requirements of ISO 9001. Common misconceptions are explained and the attendees will learn how to achieve maximum benefit from using ISO 9001.

After attending this course, attendees will have the knowledge and tools to implement and maintain ISO 9001 systems effectively. A copy of ISO 9001 is included in each of the attendee course packs.

This is a two day course with exercises and coursework. (Richard Hadfield, the tutor, has been auditing quality management systems for nearly 20 years and is a member of ISO TC 176)
